Konrad Ewald

Gernot Adrion, orchestra violist and chamber musician, has written for various line-ups already. Trois moments musicaux for 3 violas was written in 1990. The three pieces «are motivically closer related than one would expect at first sight. Apart from the common harmonic ground of the keys C minor and E-flat major, odd meter time signatures are finding consistent use (3 to 11)», says the composer in the preface. The Berceuse starts in a 7/8; measure 19 continues in an 11/8, and from measure 33 onwards there's a 7/8 again. That's absolutely feasible. The Elégy, starting in a 5/4, changes to a 9/8 in measure 13; no struggles either: A dotted quarter note equals a prior quarter note. The Gigue is written in a 3/8. For once new (and tonal) music which was written for the people; Amateurs may play and enjoy this work without side effects. And: The three parts are absolutely equal in worth and challenge.
