David Nathaniel Baker(1931–2016)

David Nathaniel Baker, Chairman of the Jazz Department at the Indiana University , ist ein sehr umtriebiger Mensch. «He has more than 65 recordings, 70 books, and 400 articles to his credit» und hat über 2000 Kompositionen vorzuweisen. Sein Concertpiece für Bratsche und Orchester ist ein gut halbstündiges Konzert in drei Sätzen. Die ersten zwei Seiten sehen vergleichsweise harmlos aus. Im 2. Satz häufen sich die Doppelgriffe, und Höhen müssen erklommen werden, in denen sich Laien verlieren. «Of the 20 concerti I have written, this one is argually the most ambitious. It is one of the most virtuosic..., is the grandest in terms of emotional sweep ...» (Baker im Booklet der Einspielung durch Paul Silverthorne, Albany Troy 559). Es klingt oft nach (amerikanischer) Filmmusik.
